Game Design

Construct 3 - Game Design for Secondary Schools

Integrating with cloud save over Google Drive, students can work from their Google Education Workspace accounts to save game assets and store their project folders online for review and further development/exploration according to their desires, even after the end of the training programme. Best experienced over a three or four-day sprint, it is a fun and engaging yet intensive and focused course for the participants.

Construct 3 is a widely used platform for teaching programming principles and basic foundations in coding, based on the Javascript language. The free version of its integrated platform is available for Guest users with a slightly bigger codespace for registered accounts (e.g. student icon/gmail users). Although the end-product would still be considerably short of creating a full-fledged web-based gaming experience, it is still sufficient for the limits that an introductory programme can promise to deliver to students who are beginning their exposure and moving towards intermediate or advanced levels of coding/programming.

Unreal 5 Game Design Engine

The style of editing in the Unreal Editor can still retain a mild semblance of block-style coding that students typically learn in Scratch or Makecode, but the level of complexity levels up as the environment transcends the 2D plane, with interface for direct input into the coding environment as well.

Working on UE remains an experimental pilot attempt at exploring the possibility of running a programme for Infocomm-Media types of CCAs as advanced exposure continues into programming and coding through game design; the key bottleneck to this experience is the level of hardware required to execute this programme.

Should the hardware be able to support the tech requirements of Unreal 5, it is possible for them to learn to code in a 3D environment engaging with coding for physics and other fun and colourful game elements and mechanics.

A stronger foundation in basic computer skills will be necessary to benefit from the potential of the Unreal 5 Game Engine over a stable, longer schedule.
